Air Dry Coatings

Air dry coatings can be used for items that are heat sensitive e.g. mdf and plastics.
An overview of a few different types of coatings is given below.

Cellulose: This is a strong quick drying paint. Since cellulose reacts easily
to both strong acids and bases and other solvents, care needs to be taken in its application.
Cellulose paints should therefore only be used for interior use.

Acrylic: This is a fast drying paint containing pigment suspended in an acrylic
polymer emulsion. Acrylic paints can be diluted by water, but will be water resistant when
dry. This paint is widely used in the machine tool industry because it is resistant to oils,
petrol and other solvents.

Synthetic: These paints include acrylic, alkyd and poly(vinyl acetate) polymers.
Whilst all acrylic resins are resistant to microbial attack, all alkyd and some poly(vinyl
acetates) aren't. They do have the advantage of being typically quick drying.
